THE UN-BORN CHILD….

Centuries have elapsed and science has drastically altered the world we live in. We owe a colossus to the new-fangled inventions of science. Our travelling in automobiles instead of horse driven carts , communicating to our relatives on wireless devices instead of letters, our being treated by doctors instead of being treated by soothsayers, priests or clergies are just a few instance of the liabilities we owe to science.
With time, man started raising questions over some scientific methods; more precisely, some acute ethical and moral contradictions that accompanied the advance of science in Human Biology debouched. Yesterday, the man who objected the ‘Evolution Theory’ of Charles Darwin, the same man today, objects the development of science to interfere in child-birth, to know and alter the characteristics of the ‘unborn child’.
Today in twenty-first century, science has enabled man, through a procedure known as ‘sperm-sorting’ to allow the parents to select the gender of their unborn child. The expensive process that costs around $2500 is being patented by the IVF, Institute of Fairfax. VA. Gender is the not the only concern for some parents, as they desire their child to be beautiful or have some specific characteristics or traits like hair, eye, skin colors or height.
The procedure has become all too famous around the globe and in an observation it was noticed that almost fourteen pregnancies out of twenty had the desirable results.
The more such processes are becoming popular, the more criticisms are they attracting from the stalwarts of religion, humanities and sociology. They believe that with such activities, science has fallen deaf to moral considerations. Such inventions are merely aberrations which most of the people try to ward off by the all-famous panacea, ‘Science is playing god’.
But such reactions have never been a cure, or a remedy to stop or un-justify such activities, especially for those parents who claim that they love their children and for their better future’s sake they opt for sperm-sorting. They further their argument by questioning that, how can parents restrain themselves, with all the modern-era technologies, after knowing that their unborn is suffering from disease or a possible ailment?
Keeping all such arguments aside, such procedures make futile the surprise that parents may well-receive in the form of the birth of their child. It makes the entire process of reproduction seem ‘man-made’, ‘unholy’ and un-Godly.
It is true that mans’ spiritual needs have always been fulfilled by Religion while his physical need have been looked after by Science. But his ‘peaceful’ survival requires the presence of both.
The birth of a child is indeed the manifestation of natures’ works and Gods’ presence; today man is indirectly trying to rob himself of such a blessing. It doesn’t mean that what science is doing is completely wrong but a horse without reins is always a bad ‘omen’ and here man should understand and try reining his own desires-Science will then automatically become ‘Ethical’.
